“Trolleys and proximity have been the two key moving parts in UK grocery recently,” says Black. “Trolleys because people don’t wish to return to supermarkets more than they have to, and proximity because people will go for top-ups at shops more locally.

Sales shifted online may never return to stores, Dixons Carphone boss warns

The boss of Dixons Carphone has warned that some sales that have shifted online during the lockdown will never return to bricks and mortar stores, as he prepares to reopen with “extreme care”.

Alex Baldock said that the retailer had been “pleased by the proportion of our store sales which have switched to online, and it’s unrealistic to think those will all return to stores”.

Writing in The Sunday Telegraph, he added: “It won’t be a case of flicking a switch and customers return immediately – reopening will be phased, and confidence will only return gradually.”

Twitter boss Jack Dorsey pledges $1bn to fund fight against coronavirus

Twitter founder Jack Dorsey has pledged $1bn (£810m) of his personal wealth to help fight the coronavirus pandemic. The chief executive of Twitter and payments Square plans to transfer $1bn in shares to a new company which will initially fund coronavirus aid efforts. 

A $100,000 donation from the new limited liability company, StartSmall, has already gone to America’s Food Fund, a project launched by actor Leonardo di Caprio and Laurene Powell Jobs, widow of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.
